Every Election Day, Election Systems & Software proudly supports customers that launch milestone “first uses” of our technology. The General Elections in 2014 were no exception.
ES&S and these dedicated, hard-working clients worked hand in hand to implement cutting-edge technologies designed to provide better elections, every day.
Fairfax County, Virginia
Virginia’s most-populous county implemented the new ExpressVote® Universal Voting System, which combines paper-based voting with touch screen technology to serve every eligible voter.
Fairfax County used 600 ExpressVote units, 525 DS200® units for precinct-level ballot scanning and vote tabulation, and one DS850® high-speed central vote scanning and tabulation unit for processing mail-in absentee ballots printed by ES&S’ Balotar® Ballot on Demand® system.
Osceola County, Florida and Anoka County, Minnesota
Election officials with ES&S’ newest Florida client reported that Osceola County was the first county to submit its election results to the State – a mere 10 minutes after the polls were closed. The county did its work so quickly thanks to DS200 and DS850 units that transmitted results via a network.
Anoka County used the same networking technology to be the first county to transmit its results to the State of Minnesota.
Cassia County, Idaho
This county in southern Idaho was the first election jurisdiction in the western United States to implement the ExpressVote Universal Voting System. Voters overwhelmingly affirmed to election officials that the ExpressVote’s easy-to-use touch screen was a great voting experience.
City of New Bedford, Massachusetts
This city of nearly 100,000 residents was the first in Massachusetts to implement a DS200 system for scanning ballots and tabulating votes.
Smith County, Texas
Smith County, Texas, located east of Dallas-Fort Worth, introduced the ExpressPass™ sample ballot feature. ExpressPass, which is compatible with ExpressVote, provided voter-specific sample ballots with the added benefit of accessibility for voters with disabilities.
Voters were able to access their sample ballots online, review and make ballot selections, get directions to polling locations and take the ballots as reference guides to early voting or Election Day polling locations. Thanks to the county’s voter education efforts, 6,274 voters used ExpressPass sample ballots.
Shelby County, Tennessee
The county, which includes Memphis, did a pilot test of ES&S Electionware® Results software to replace its outdated results reporting system. Absentee and early voting results were posted to ElectionWare Results, and updates were made throughout the evening as precinct results were reported to the County. The results were available to the public both online and on-site, and final results were posted before 10:30 p.m.
In addition, Shelby County used the Balotar Ballot on Demand printer system to eliminate time-consuming manual steps when accurately and efficiently producing absentee ballots.
“The General Election in 2014 reinforced that ES&S is leading the election industry in offering voting solutions that make elections better for both election jurisdictions and their constituents,” said Matt Nelson, Senior Vice President of Sales.
