In Solidarity

June 9, 2020

Like countless Americans, we are extraordinarily saddened and upset by the killing of George Floyd. One of ES&S’ core values is “Talking Straight,” and we believe that a fundamental way to begin positive change in our country is to start calling things what they really are: Mr. George Floyd was effectively lynched in broad daylight. In no way were the actions taken against Mr. Floyd acceptable or deserved. We unequivocally condemn these actions.

The massive outcry in response to this tragic event has reminded us of the vital need for all humans to be heard and understood. These basic human needs and rights are the pillars that support equality, justice and liberty as guaranteed in our Constitution. Justice must be applied equally to ensure the collective well-being of all members of our society.

In response to recent events, we pledge the following actions to communicate our solidarity with those in the Black community who have lived too long experiencing systemic racism.

  1. We are listening. We will make it a priority to have the important conversations to understand systemic racism and what role we can play as an organization to eradicate it. We commit as a company to take the necessary actions to create change where we can.
  2. We are learning. Through our active listening, we can create learning opportunities, leading to understanding and actions that are crucial not only for the sake of everyone at ES&S, but for the healing of our communities and our country as we do our part to dismantle racism. We pledge to keep learning to help bring sustained and long-lasting change.
  3. We are honoring. By flying our flag at half-staff for a total of 8 days and 46 seconds, we are honoring the life of George Floyd and standing in solidarity with his last moments. We erected the largest U.S. flag in the state atop our headquarters as an expression of our responsibility to uphold democracy. As an American company, we have a role in the support of every person’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That right was tragically stolen from George Floyd, and our democracy has greatly suffered as a result. Therefore, we have lowered our flag to acknowledge this injustice and to serve as a reminder to us all of the need for change.

Fulfilling one’s right to vote is one of the most fundamental and powerful ways to have a voice, to be heard, and to be understood. ES&S is honored to be in a position to support that right.

As we find our way through these very difficult times, we will stay fervently committed to doing all we can to ensure every American has a voice, is heard, and is understood.
